Depression can affect anyone…Don’t suffer in silence

News ...
The Grass Roots Awareness Project 09
09 - 10

Following the economical downturn, in January 2009, we decided that we needed to make a sustained effort in response to the social issues people were facing, which we know can lead to social isolation and depression.
Our Grass Roots Awareness Project 09 has taken a new direction. This year's project, unlike previous projects, is being ran throughout 2009. In addition to our normal distribution, we have decided to do door to door leaflet drops to the areas that are suffering the most from the economical crisis, where jobs are being lost and families are facing poverty.
Each area mentor has teamed with some fantastic local community projects and support services which will be profiled on the leaflets.

But .... we need your support to produce and deliver the leaflets.

Welcome
Depression in the UK is a common medical condition, which often leads to intense feelings of sadness and despair, and affects 1 in every 5 people at some time in their lives. These feelings can be brought on by a range of social factors including debt, isolation, family breakdown and job loss.

Depression in the UK is one of the most common reasons for people to visit their GP, but it is estimated that as many as 75% of people with depression do not seek help from their doctor. This can be because many people mistakenly believe that depression is a sign of weakness, or an inability to cope, rather than realising that depression is a common and treatable illness. There is no one reason why people take their own lives. It is often as a result of problems building up to the point where the person can see no other way to cope with what they’re experiencing.

This accumilation of problems lead to over 5000 suicides in 2007.

With the aid of our volunteers from a diverse spectrum of backgrounds, the Awareness Project is striving to bridge the gap that exists between those who suffer from depression and those that should know about it.
